Planar Inspect FAQs

The Planar system is an automated 2D inspection and reverse-engineering measurement solution that uses a high-resolution camera, a backlit glass surface, and no moving parts to scan parts quickly. It’s designed for flat or folded components—such as sheet metal, gaskets, laminations or semi-transparent materials—and records up to 40 million points in under 0.1 seconds.

The system supports a range of industries including sheet metal fabrication, automotive, aerospace, industrial machinery, electronics, and materials like plastics, wood, cork—even fabrics or semi-transparent materials. Whether your parts are gaskets, O-rings, flat laser cut components, or complex shapes, Planar delivers value.

Depending on the model, Planar systems achieve measuring accuracy in the range of ±20 µm to ±50 µm (≈ ±0.00079" to ±0.00197") for 2D measurement. The system can complete scans in fractions of a second thanks to its fixed-camera architecture.

Planar offers a broad database of 11 different models to accommodate part sizes up to e.g. 158.5" × 118.1" (for the P 770.35) and more compact tables for smaller parts. Use the Product Selector tool to input your part size, thickness and inspection needs-then choose the model that fits best.

Yes — while Planar is primarily a 2D inspection machine, certain models support add-on modules such as the Opti-Scan to extend into 3D scanning or reverse engineering of formed or 3D parts.

Each Planar system is installed by an ISO-accredited service engineer and comes with a calibration kit (alignment target, certified test part, training part). Full documentation with ANAB / ISO 17025 traceability is provided. Typical installation takes less than one day.

Because Planar has no moving parts and uses a fixed-camera design, it can operate directly on the shop floor next to production machines rather than needing isolated metrology labs. This enables faster feedback and inspection cycles.

The included software supports immediate inspection result feedback, reverse-engineering, CAD comparison, GD&T analysis, reporting, SPC (statistical process control) export, and editing/cleaning of data for accurate measurement outcomes.

Along with on-site installation training, Productivity Quality offers remote training, web-based boot camps, downloadable resources like posters, and full service support for repairs, calibration, upgrades and software updates.

You can schedule a demo, request a proposal or fill out the contact form on the website. A dedicated service representative will reach out to discuss your part sizes, inspection needs, and budget — helping you choose the optimal Planar model.
